Phyto-collagen: plumping the skin… without collagen

Ansólogy Bouncy Plumping Serum with phyto-collagen

A ‘plant collagen’ serum that promises to plump the skin: tempting. Except that, biologically, collagen is an animal protein — no plant makes it. So, is it a con? Not at all. As long as you know what you are really buying.

The truth first

Collagen is an animal structural protein. Making it requires enzymes (and a cofactor, vitamin C) that plants do not have. The conclusion is clear: there is no natural plant source of collagen. Stating as fact that a product ‘contains plant collagen’ is therefore misleading.

And even ‘real’ collagen (marine, bovine) applied to the skin would not ‘top it up’: the molecule is far too large to cross the skin barrier. At best, it hydrates the surface.

‘Plant collagen’ does not exist. But the plumped effect is very real — it simply comes from elsewhere.

What ‘phyto-collagen’ does

Behind the term lie three families of actives, which are best not confused:

  • Actives that help support your own production (Centella, bakuchiol): they accompany the skin’s natural firmness mechanisms.
  • ‘Building blocks’ (amino acids, peptides): precursors and signals, not finished collagen.
  • Humectant polysaccharides that mimic the cosmetic effect of collagen (film, smoothing, plumping): this is the route taken by Tremella & Chaga mushrooms, the ingredients Ansólogy uses.

Tremella & Chaga: hydration that plumps

Tremella fuciformis and Chaga are rich in highly humectant polysaccharides: they saturate the surface of the epidermis with water. Tremella can hold up to ~500× its weight in water* — a genuine plant alternative to hyaluronic acid. The result: skin that looks plumped, bouncy and visibly denser, with the look of dehydration lines filled in.

How to read it

‘~500× its weight in water’ is a property of the ingredient Tremella (sourced data), not a result measured on a finished product. It is a nuance many brands blur — we don’t.

What we can say

  • Visibly plumps and smooths; bouncy skin
  • Intense hydration (a plant alternative to hyaluronic acid)
  • Helps support natural collagen production
  • Anti-ageing, anti-wrinkle (on appearance and visible signs)

What we won’t say

  • ‘Contains / provides collagen’
  • ‘Rebuilds / penetrates the dermis’
  • ‘Fills wrinkles from deep within’
  • ‘Regenerates tissue’

Peptides, the ‘signalling building blocks’

They are often paired with phyto-collagen. Biomimetic peptides (such as palmitoyl pentapeptide) are short chains of amino acids that firm the look of the skin and visibly smooth wrinkles and fine lines, application after application. We talk about ‘building blocks’ and visible firmness — never about ‘collagen stimulation’ without proof on the finished product.

How to use it

  • As a serum, morning and/or evening, after cleansing and toner, on slightly damp skin.
  • Before your cream, which seals in the hydration.
  • In the morning, always finish with sun protection.

At Seoul Paris Care

Phyto-collagen is the signature of Ansólogy’s Bouncy Plumping Serum: Tremella & Chaga, peptides, hyaluronic acid and bakuchiol, for a glass-skin effect (a smooth, water-saturated complexion that catches the light).

And a point of honesty: this serum contains no PDRN (that is in the patches). Its stars really are phyto-collagen and peptides.

Frequently asked questions

Does ‘plant collagen’ exist?

No. Collagen is an animal protein; no plant produces it. ‘Phyto-collagen’ refers to plant actives (here Tremella & Chaga) that mimic the plumping and hydrating effect — without being collagen.

Is it vegan?

The plant angle is precisely the point: a plumped, hydrated effect with no ingredients of animal origin. Always check for the vegan mention on the product.

Is it as effective as hyaluronic acid?

Tremella polysaccharides are a credible plant alternative for hydration and a plumped effect at the surface. They work differently, but to the same end: saturating the surface with water.
