Korean double cleansing, step by step

Ansólogy Olio-BHA melting cleansing balm, the first step of double cleansing

It is probably the best-known Korean step — and the most misunderstood. There is nothing harsh about double cleansing: done properly, it is actually the gentlest way to remove the day’s make-up, sun protection and pollution.

What is double cleansing?

Two steps, in this order: first an oil-based cleanser (oil or balm) that dissolves everything oily, then a water-based cleanser (foam, gel) that removes the rest and cleanses the skin itself. That’s it.

Why two steps

Because ‘oil dissolves oil’. Water and a simple gel will not shift long-wear foundation or water-resistant SPF. The oil phase takes care of it without rubbing; the water phase finishes the job. The result: clean skin without tightness, where a single cleanser that is too strong would have stripped it.

Step 1: the melting balm

A good cleansing balm melts into an oil on contact with the skin, dissolves make-up and SPF, then turns into a milky veil on contact with water and rinses off without a greasy film. When it contains BHA (salicylic acid), it visibly unclogs and refines the look of pores; a touch of Cica soothes while you cleanse.

Measured on the finished product

On Ansólogy’s Olio-BHA balm: −32.6% pore volume in 4 weeks* and 98.6% of pore impurities removed after the very first wash**. (*Antera 3D, 20 subjects, 4 weeks, twice daily · **i-Scope, 20 subjects, 1 wash.) The balm refines the look of pores; it does not ‘tighten’ them, and it is not an acne product.

The routine, step by step

  • 1. On dry skin, in the evening: massage in the balm to melt away make-up and SPF.
  • 2. Emulsify with a little lukewarm water (the balm turns milky), then rinse.
  • 3. Follow with a gentle water-based cleanser (foam, gel).
  • 4. Continue with your toner, then the rest of your routine.

Who is it for?

For anyone who wears make-up or applies SPF (so… everyone, in summer). Combination to oily skin will appreciate BHA; dry or sensitive skin will prefer a rich, fragrance-free balm. It is a cleansing step: it prepares the skin; it is not a substitute for medical care.

Frequently asked questions

Should I do it every day?

In the evening, yes, whenever there is make-up or SPF to remove. In the morning, a simple gentle cleanser is enough: no need for the balm.

Will it strip my skin?

Quite the opposite: done properly, double cleansing is gentler than a single harsh cleanser. The balm removes oil without rubbing, and the gentle cleanser finishes the job softly.

Sensitive skin: what should I watch out for?

Many balms contain fragrance and allergens (limonene, linalool…). On very reactive skin, do a patch test in the crook of the elbow and choose fragrance-free formulas.
